From Ed’s Guest Blogger: What It Really Means to Be a Fashion Stylist

Since leaving my 9-to-5 job to become my own boss, more than ever I’m faced with the question, “So what do you really do?” Figuring out how to answer is harder than you might think. Most of the time I’d say I’m a fashion stylist, but depending on the day, I’m a fashion editor, stylist or consultant. Each role has its own unique skill set and challenges, which is why I’m breaking it down for you below.

 

Fashion Stylist

Since starting MakingManhattan.com, I not only get the great opportunity to style editorial articles for the site, but, I’ve also styled stories and covers for different publications. That means I work with the magazine editors to call in clothing for the shoot and put together outfits for feature stories and celebrity cover shoots. I also work with a few young celebrities, helping them choose outfits for red carpet events, such as movie premieres, award shows, and Comic Cons.

 

Fashion Editor

I started my career in the Teen Vogue and InStyle fashion departments, and I rely on those experiences when I collaborate with magazines as a freelance editor. Recently, I’ve written articles for Real Simple and Guest of a Guest. My work with magazines doesn’t stop at writing. As a social media influencer, I get to partner with these publications’ digital teams, taking over their social media accounts for big events and attending special events they host, which I wouldn’t have been able to do while employed by another magazine. I’m also the founder and editor of MakingManhattan.com, where I manage a team of writers. I look over their pitches and work with them to help develop their ideas, which is super rewarding because I can help my writers reach their full potential.

 

Consultant

As a consultant, I work with brands to help them develop their messaging for social media. Through social media collaborations and partnerships, we discuss how they want to target, market, and portray their brand to the world. I’m then in charge of producing content that meets those guidelines that they can share across their social media accounts.
