Three Things Ed Learned from Breaking Into Food Writing

Ed learned so much from food writer extraordinaire Rose Martelli at the Breaking Into Food Writing class on Thursday, April 8. Here are just a few nuggets of her food writing wisdom.

Make Friend With Chefs: If you want to get the inside scoop on the hottest new food trend, or what restaurants are in the works, befriend the people who will know before anyone else: chefs, restaurant managers and bartenders “Chefs talk a lot,” Martelli says. “I promise they will give you ideas for stories.”

Think Big: While you’ll obviously find food stories in Food & Wine and Saveur, you’ll also find them in Fitness, Fortune and GQ. “Food stories are never just food stories,” Martelli says. “They could be health, business, or style.”

Be Credible: When reviewing a restaurant, you need to go multiple times to get the full experience. “You must go at least three times,” Martelli says. “Because everyone has an off night.”

If you weren’t able to attend this class, don’t worry, we’ll have another one soon! Until then, you might be interested in Ed’s (very popular) Intro to Freelancing class on Monday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 4 from 7-9pm. Click here to get all the details!
