Ed note: After graduating from college and making the big move to New York City, this whippersnapper found herself looking for a job and unsure of what would be next. Then she made the best decision: Signing up for Ed2010’s Buddy System. Read her success story!
Signing up for Ed2010’s Buddy System on a whim last year was easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made — both professionally and socially.
Almost exactly two years ago, I packed up all of my belongings into a 14-foot U-haul and moved from Florida to New York City, hoping to make it big in the magazine industry. I didn’t have a job lined up — or an internship for that matter — but I had high hopes and big dreams that my future was in magazine publishing.
However, when I first arrived in NYC, I found that nailing down an internship was a lot harder than I imagined it’d be. That’s when I decided to seek help via Ed2010. As a frequent visitor to the site, I knew Ed was a great resource for jobs and internships, but I didn’t realize it was home to a number of editors and mentors in the industry. So after stumbling upon the Ed2010 Buddy System application, I quickly filled it out, hoping I’d get picked and paired up with a fun, influential editor in the biz.
And a few weeks later, that’s exactly what happened! I was paired with Jenn Sinrich, lead producer and associate editor of WhatToExpect.com, who has helped me feel at ease with what felt like a never-ending job hunt, replied to all of my frantic emails before (and after) interviews and shared my love of cats (which, obviously, is pretty important).
Now, I’m working as a freelance beauty assistant at People StyleWatch and I still email Jenn for advice (and to chat!). She’s not only my mentor, but my friend as well. Through the Ed2010 Buddy System, I’ve learned how beneficial it is to have a mentor figure in your life — he or she will not only help to lead you to your goals, but do so by giving out some of the best advice since they were once in your shoes.
So, future buddies, do yourselves a favor and sign up for Ed2010’s Buddy System. I guarantee you won’t regret it!
