Maybe we’re biased, but we think editors are a rare form of professional unicorns. From delivering clean copy, to attending dozens of press previews each week, to working on their side hustle after hours, they wear a lot of hats, yet make sure no task slips through the cracks.
So how do they do it? Below, three editors share their best multi-tasking tips for getting things done:
1. Take advantage of every moment
“I write my freelance pitches on the subway when I commute. I have a running list of concepts in my notes app and type them into full pitches on the subway. During the week– either before or after work — I’ll send emails to publicists or sources. I write most of my freelance articles on the weekends, so it’s much easier to already have product information or answers to interview questions ready to go. A few minutes in the morning or evening cuts down on the amount of time I spend working on weekends.” — Shannon Bauer, Associate Beauty Editor at Meredith’s Parents Network
2. Write everything down
“Being an editor entails a lot more than just your nine-to-five. We’re always buzzing around press previews or running to a “quick cocktail” with publicists, not to mention the occasional freelance gig. It can be overwhelming, but I am an avid list-maker. Write down your to-do’s of the day down to the minute detail—each check mark feels amazing! And when you need to write a story, close the door, exit your email, and put on your focus playlist.” — Annie Loynd, Senior Editor at Quest Magazine
3. Your calendar app is your BFF
“I couldn’t survive without my calendar and reminder apps on my iPhone. I plan out almost every hour of my day with the calendar app and use my reminders to notify myself each morning of things that need to be done. If there’s certain emails I haven’t gotten around to or an article I need to edit that day, I will set a reminder for myself.” — Caroline Vazzana, editor, stylist and founder of MakingManhattan.com.
4. Schedule your day wisely
“If possible, I schedule press previews before and after work. Nothing ruins my productivity more than needing to leave for an event mid-afternoon.”— Shannon Bauer
5. Yes, it’s okay to have some down-time
“I think trying to prioritize what’s most important in that moment is key. But also, don’t stress yourself out — life is too short to be unhappy! If you need to take a random Tuesday afternoon off and relax, do it.” — Caroline Vazzana
