Next Stop: Your Magazine Dream Job

Zoom Resume Workshop: Get Your Resume Ready for Your First Media Job Search

It’s no fun graduating in the middle of a global pandemic. It sucks on so many levels, but for sure this one: the crappy job market. It was SO GREAT just a few months ago and now. Well, all we can say is UGH.

Don’t lose hope! There are still jobs — and there will be more opening up soon. I believe there will be more entry-level roles in content marketing, social media, PR/comms, and multimedia (audio, video, graphic design) first before print or online editorial. But still: There WILL be jobs! And they will need YOU and all those skills you have to rock them.

NOW is the time to prepare your resume (and your badass self) so you are ready to pounce on your dream job when it opens up. As you may know, the media industry has its own quirks and preferences for how experience is formatted and how your skills are highlighted with a special emphasis on showcasing your niche and creativity. In this Zoom class, I will help you makeover your resume so it speaks the language of the editors you’ll be applying to work for.

A bit about me: I’m a former editor and media exec with experience working in print and digital editorial and content/brand marketing for large media companies (Hearst, Scholastic, Conde Nast, Meredith). I’m now a media recruiter who helps large companies like those I used to work for as well as non-media companies find talented folks for roles in editorial and marketing. I’ve hired tons of entry-level candidates in my career myself as a hiring manager and coached even more via Ed2010, the website and community of young editorial whippersnappers I’ve run for 20+ years. I’d love to help you get your resume in fighting shape — so you can find your dream job in this ever-changing, exciting industry. Cheers, Chandra

In this class you will learn:

• the kinds of details that hiring managers and recruiters look for in entry-level media candidates

• how ‘bots and automatic tracking systems work in screening resumes at large companies

• how to format and submit your resume so it gets in human hands

• the specific keywords you need to include for entry-level media jobs

• how to highlight your media internships and/or freelance writing in college so it appeals to editors / hiring managers

• the best way to highlight non-media experience or if you should  remove it entirely

• what not to include / remove from your resume now that you have graduated

+ I’ll share examples of good resumes and reserve time to answer your questions about resume writing.

Fee: $95 per student

“My resume was hard to manage and I had trouble organizing all the info in a way that showed my experience clearly and concisely. Enter Chandra. She consolidated, reworded and repackaged it all — even getting my voice and brand shining through too. I think I was stopping myself from going after many opportunities because of my resume, and therefore my messaging and talking points were all over the place. I didn’t know how to describe my career, my skills, and my future. Having Chandra’s “magic touch” on my resume has changed that.”
