ABOUT MEDSHADOW
MedShadow is a nonprofit foundation that focuses on the safest ways to take over-the-counter and prescription medications. Our name derives from the fact that side effects can sometimes be difficult to recognize, which is why we work to illuminate and explain medication reactions that may be minimized or obscured. Our team is a small but mighty group of mission-aligned journalists and marketers who strongly believe in the power of quality investigative, explanatory and service content that can educate consumers, influence policy, and improve people’s health.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Develop and refine MedShadow’s organic social strategy across TikTok, Instagram, Instagram Stories, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Facebook, and Reddit
- Produce engaging and educational social-first content tailored to each platform
- Monitor performance metrics and audience behavior, using analytics to optimize content and improve engagement over time
PRODUCTION & STRATEGY
- Ensure that all social media content reflects MedShadow’s mission, voice, and accuracy standards
- Create and produce social-first content across platforms, including graphics, visual assets, and short-form video. Manage all aspects of video production and (shooting, editing, coaching contributors) and work alongside external vendors and occasionally participate in on-camera work
- Develop, execute, and refine social media strategy, including adjusting workflows, managing content calendars, and collaborating with content and marketing teams to maintain healthy posting cadence
- Stay up to date on health news trends as well as dynamically changing social media platforms and emerging tools
- Regularly rack and analyze all channel metrics and performance, identifying patterns, audience behavior insights, content opportunities and audience growth opportunities; regularly present data and insights to the team
- Design and track small-scale experiments with new content formats to determine what approaches resonate best with MedShadow’s audiences
COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT
- Respond to comments and messages and thoughtfully manage any misinformation, trolling, or sensitive conversations
- Identify reputable creators and influencers and engage them through outreach, reshares, or collaborations
REQUIREMENTS
- 1–3 years of experience as a social media content producer, coordinator, or manager, ideally within a mission-driven organization
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
- Fluency in organic social media best practices, trends, and platform features
- Strong interest in or ability to learn about health, medication, and science-related topics
- Proficiency with common social media tools, including design tools (e.g. Canva), project management tools (Airtable preferred), and analytics and aggregation tools (e.g. Sprout, ManyChat, and Linktree)
- Highly self-directed, organized, and able to meet deadlines and maintain consistent output while working remotely
- You must live in the NYC metro area. While this position is remote, you must be willing/able to work onsite in NYC, on short notice, which will be variable (e.g., sometimes once a week or once a month as needed). All commuting costs to the office will be at the expense of the employee
This role reports to the Staff Editor, with additional collaboration from the Head of Content.
The salary for this position is $65–75K, commensurate with experience, and includes paid time off, 100% paid health insurance, and matching IRA contribution.
