Starting your own blog? Fabulous! Just a note: It’s not as easy as snap, filter, hashtag, post. After about 165 WordPress malfultions, I’ve come to realize creating a website requires a regimen. Here are super-important (and some straight-up revolutionary) tips to get you started.
Carve out times and days that are solely dedicated to creating content. Life is hectic and schedules are constantly subject to change. Choose a blogging schedule that will work best for you. Pro tip: Do not plan to write an article at 5:00 am before work if you’re not a morning person. I’ve tried and failed to do it…several times.
Create content you feel passionate about. Don’t feel compelled to create fashion and beauty content just because you think it’s what everyone wants to read. I’ve come across a lot of friends who feel that adding those elements to their blog will improve it and that’s not always the case. While I love reading fashion and beauty articles, I realize that I write much better culture and opinions pieces. Make sure your blog caters to what you do best, like this post I wrote.
Advertise your work. Seriously. At first, I was worried about posting my blog entries on my personal social media accounts. I was nervous that people would react with the, “Ugh, another blogger,” sentiment, but they actually loved it! Everyone said they were impressed. (Hopefully they weren’t lying!)
Make your blog name and layout memorable. It’s easier to advertise great content when your website has a beautiful aesthetic and an interesting or punny name! This means steering away from using your own name as a blog title.
Franchise your work. Think of a weekly gimmick you can use that will force you to write posts and give future blog subscribers a reason to refresh your page at any given time. For example, I’m about to launch a recurring weekly series called “Monday Moans.” Every Monday, I’ll dish on all the annoying stuff I experienced/saw the week prior.
Match up your social media accounts–even if that means creating new ones. Pay special attention to Instagram and Twitter, since those are platforms where you can easily engage with your readers. Plus, it’s basically free advertising. Don’t forget about Pinterest: Web traffic owes a large thank you to the platform for attracting new readers.
With all of that info, I hope you feel inspired and motivated to begin building your own empire. Happy blogging, y’all!
