When you’re a magazine editor, your workdays are unpredictable. From deadlines to press events, it seems like we’re always on the go without a lot of time to primp before a happy hour date with friends. That being said, lack of primping time shouldn’t be an excuse to skip out on plans. These three summer trends can take you from the office to an after-work event to happy hour with minimal effort on your part.
Layer Your Dress Over A T-Shirt
This look from your childhood is back and better than ever. The best part? You can mix-and-match like crazy. I love pairing cool vintage graphic tees underneath simple slip dresses. It makes for a very laid back look that can easily (and literally) be elevated with a pair of heels. Since some offices expect employees to cover their shoulders, this is a great way to do so. If you are planning to head somewhere right after work, make a quick change in the bathroom and remove your t-shirt from the equation. Voila. Your new slip-dress-only look is perfect for a night out on the town. Kate Moss vibes all around.
Use A Scarf As A Softer Choker
Chokers are still a thing. Is it overdone? Potentially. But I still want to embrace the 90’s as much as I can, okay? Scarves are a softer way to try out the choker trend at work. At the office, I love to tie my scarf in a preppy front-facing knot—kind of like a boy scout. When I’m leaving work, I move the knot to the back of my neck and let my hair down so it looks more like an extra-thick choker. I visit my local thrift shop for pretty printed silk scarves for $5 a piece. Score!
Swap Out Your Tank Top for a Bodysuit
When it’s hot and sticky, a bodysuit can be a trendier alternative to your typical tank top. Pair it with a denim skirt and a sheer blouse for an office appropriate look. Then remove the blouse and add chunky mules for happy hour. I usually carry a big bag to work, so I can easily sneak my mules into the office for a quick change.
