While you’re scrambling for an insanely creative, last-minute Halloween costume, don’t dress up like everyone else in a Hillary Clinton in a presidential pantsuit. Instead, let the magazine industry serve as some impressive costume inspiration that you can totally pull off.
Check out these seven magazine-themed costume ideas that will make all your editorial friends jealous.
1. Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada
We love the idea of dressing up as a certain Vogue editor as much as the next Edster, but channeling your inner Miranda Priestly this spooky season is just as effective and less ubiquitous among the fashion flock. Don’t be afraid to pull out all the stops here: Wear those statement booties, throw on a (faux) fur jacket, and of course, don’t forget your oversized sunglasses. Take your beauty routine to the next level by spraying your hair with temporary grey dye and style it into a French twist. That’s all.
2. Bill Cunningham
This summer’s passing of famed New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham was heartbreaking. Since his uniform and cheery personality were just as iconic as his street style snaps, Halloween is a great opportunity to pay respect to the fashion legend. To nail his signature look, pick up a bright blue button down shirt or anorak as well as some khakis at your local secondhand store and pair them with black sneakers or ballet flats. Go the extra mile by riding a bike to the party and bring your camera. Bill would be so proud.
3. Ghost of Magazines Past
Magazines come and go, but the past few years have been particularly rough. Some of our favorite titles, like Lucky, Details, and More, have abruptly folded. So why not pay homage to your favorite defunct glossy and assemble a creative Halloween costume while you’re at it? All you need to do is wear a head-to-toe black outfit and lug around an issue from a deceased magazine. We know you have copies of Cosmo Girl at your parents’ house. Bring this costume to the next level by sporting some ghostly makeup. This is the perfect opportunity for beauty editors to showcase their amazing contouring and smokey eye skills.
4. Style Blogger
If you’ve always dreamed of wearing loud, insanely trendy outfits but haven’t had the guts to step outside your bedroom in them, now’s your chance. Since bloggers wear the latest trends like a boss, rock a slip with a turtleneck and socks with platform sandals. Whatever your inner sartorialist desires. Color clash, experiment with different prints, layer (it’ll probably be chilly on Halloween, so you’ll need it). Be sure to practice some blogger-worthy poses in the mirror before heading out.
5. Social Media Editor
Jobs dedicated to tweeting, snapping, and ‘gramming are relatively new to the industry, and this recent shift can serve as a spot-on Halloween costume. Write your social media handles on an old T-shirt to rack up some extra followers, talk in Twitter-like sound bytes (140 characters or less), and even toss on a flower crown so you can spend your whole night with a Snapchat-worthy filter. Plus, if you have your phone out all night it won’t be rude—it’s called “getting into character.”
6. Click Bait
Love ’em or hate ’em, click bait articles are very much part of the media cycle. And on Halloween, they could double as the perfectly punny yet simple costume idea. Grab an old T-shirt and scribble a sensationalist headline on the front with a fabric marker— we’re thinking “You’ll NEVER Guess What T-Swift Just Said About Her Ex.” As for accessories, buy an inexpensive fishing pole or tackle box. Pair your outfit with jeans and some sneakers, and you’re good to go. Easy, witty, and extremely comfortable. This outfit hits the Halloween Trifecta.
7. On Deadline
Are you way too consumed with press events, transcribing interviews, and deadlines to even think of a costume? Well, you’re not alone. If your Halloween plans fall on the quieter side, dressing up as an editor who’s on deadline may be the right move. And by dressing up, we mean throwing on your a pair of nice-looking sweatpants, oversized sweater and a messy bun because if we’re being honest, we’re usually more concerned with the task at hand than our #OOTD. For a finishing touch, carry your notebook to the party.
