Ed assumes you probably have at least one Facebook friend who has been posting articles or cracking jokes about 12/21/12 — the day known as Winter Solstice and is currently being correlated with “doomsday” and the Maya apocalypse. Since Ed doesn’t know how to wrap his head around this type of hullabaloo, he decided to handle it the only way he knows how — to bring magazines into the mix.
For his annual year-end round up, he asked his amazing, incredible staff to chime in on the magazines they’d want with them if the world were really ending. (Ed finds the picks to be quite clever and resourceful!) Check it out below and head to his Facebook page to share what glossy you’d choose!
1. If you’re looking at 12/21/12 as if you were headed into The Hunger Games…
“Wired — if anyone is going to survive, it’s going to be the nerds.” — Katerina, Ed on Campus Admissions Director
“I’d pick up Wired. It’d be great for debunking myths up until the moment of total collapse — and then, of course, if needed I’d turn to it as a guide for hacking all sorts of apocalypse scenarios.” – Rachel Mount, Book Club Director
“Popular Mechanics because it would probably include a guide on how to survive the apocalypse or, at the very least, how to enjoy going down with it.”- Ashley Ross, Tweeter
2. If you want to spend your time expanding your mind with literary works…
“The New Yorker. Because only at the end of the world will I have time to read the whole thing cover to cover.” – Chandra Turner, President/Founder
“The New Yorker. Those comprehensive features will keep me entertained for weeks!” – Yelena Shuster, Associate Editor (Blog)
“New York. It already kept me company during the blackout of Hurricane Sandy, which pretty much felt like the end of the world in NYC.” – Alessandra Foresto, Assistant Features Editor
“I’d snag the last issue of New York. So yes: I’d meet my demise knowing who and what was/were both brilliant and highbrow during humanity’s last week.” – Gennifer Delman, Ed on Campus Assistant (Admissions)/Reporter
“I would read New York‘s ‘Reasons to Love New York’ issue because it would remind me of how much I’ve loved living in this great city!” – Elizabeth Lilly – WhisperJobs Poster/Reporter
“New York for one last long read; Backpacker for the survival skills.” – Christine Mattheis, Web Associate
3. If your Crock Pot is in your “go bag”…
“Bon Appetit! And I’d make it my mission to try every recipe in the issue, because who’s really going to be counting calories when the world is about to end?” – Allison Berry, WhisperJobs Poster
“Food Network because then just in case I happen to survive at least I can try to nourish myself with home-cooked meals.” – Ariana Finlayson, Web Features Editor
4. If the words “organizational therapy” ring true to you…
“Real Simple, because life after the apocalypse would be anything but!” – Kristen Green, 60-Minute Mentors Deputy Director
“Real Simple, so at least I could get tips on organizing my meager belongings one last time.” – Michelle Profis, WhisperJobs Poster
“HGTV Magazine, because if I do survive, I’ll need to seriously pimp out my pad. After all, I’d be spending a lot of time there!” – Colleen Moody, City Chapters Director
5. If you’re looking to get zen…
“I would read an old issue of YM from like 1997, because I would be nostalgic and reflecting back on the different chapters of my life.” – Christie Griffin, Web Editor
“SELF because then I could have the best tips and tricks to make my last days full of happiness, delicious (and nutritious) food, awesome workouts, and of course, positive inspiration to live it up.” – Maggie Young, WhisperJobs Poster
6. If you can’t resist a pun and some fun…
“Cosmopolitan, so at least I could go out with a bang, if you know what I mean.” – Diana, Ed On Campus Associate (Trust Fund)
