An Editor’s Dictionary for Corporate Jargon

In The Talent Fairy’s Editorial Hiring Report we found that the #1 challenge for editors pivoting out of traditional media was learning the language of corporate America and digital marketing. We asked our community to provide the terms that tripped them up and created this resource guide for you when you make your pivot. Is there a term we missed? Agile – Agile project management is an iterative approach to managing software development projects that focuses on continuous releases and incorporating customer feedback with every iteration.

AOR – agency of record or area of responsibility

AOV – average order value

BAU – business as usual

BOD – board of directors 

BOFU – bottom of funnel (see Funnel)

B2B Business-to-Business

B2C Busines-to-Consumer

CTA – call to action 

CAC – customer acquisition cost 

CLTV – customer lifetime value 

CSAT – customer satisfaction 
CPA – cost per acquisition

CPC – cost per click

CPV – cost per view 

CPPV – cost per page view 

CTR – click through rate 

CTOR – click through open rate  

CVR – conversion rate

Deliverable – anything you create as part of a project / campaign that is delivered to the client as part of your scope of work (SOW)

EBITDA – earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (essentially profit)

GA – generally available 

EAT – expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness; for SEO

EEAT – the extra “E” is experience

ERG – employee resource group 

Deck – powerpoint other other presentation 

DOF – document on file 

Funnel – the customer journey from awareness to point of purchase (see TOFU, MOFU, BOFU)

KPI – key performance indicator 

FPO – for placement only (think: TK)

FY – fiscal year 

LTV – lifetime value

LOI – letter of intent 

HOK – hands on keyboard; meaning time you do work vs attending meetings 

IAT – integrated agency team 

ICP: Ideal customer profile

IO – insertion order 

MVP – minimum viable product

NPS – Net Promoter Score 

M – thousands 

MOFU – middle of funnel

MLR: medical /legal regulatory review

MM – millions

MQL – marketing qualified leads

OKR – objective and key results

POC – proof of concept  / also: people of color and point of contact! 

PDP – product detail page 

PLP – product listings page 

PRD – product requirements document 

RPE – revenue per email 

ROAS – return on ad spend 

ROI – return on investment

UGC – user-generated content

TAM – total addressable / available market 

TOFU – top of funnel 

TOS – time on site

RFP – request for proposal 

SaaS – software as a service 

Scrum- a way to get things done as a team in small pieces at a time, with continuous experimentation and feedback loops along the way to learn and improve as you go. Scrum helps people and teams deliver value incrementally in a collaborative way. . 

SAM – serviceable available market 

SEM – search engine marketing

SOM – serviceable obtainable market 

SME – subject matter expert 

SOP – standard operating procedure

SOW – statement of work; also: scope of work 

Sprint – project timeline for a product / engineering team 

Spike – task created by product / engineering team to understand a project’s scope

SQL – sales qualified leads
Stakeholder  – anyone who has a vested interest in the project / work at hand

S&D – surprise and delight 

Retro – retrospective; reviewing how a project went (think: post-mortem) 

UX – user experience 

UVP – unique value proposition 

VAP – video articles page 

Wireframe – A wireframe is a layout of a web page that demonstrates what interface elements will exist on key pages. It is a critical part of the interaction design process.
