Nothing makes Ed happier than when he’s helping young Whippersnappers, and especially when he gets to hand out his Trust Find to one lucky unpaid intern each semester. The latest winner? AnaMaria Glavan, a junior at Fordham University who spent her semester interning at Good Housekeeping. Not to mention, she’s also Ed’s brand-spanking-new Twitter Manager. Get the scoop on her below!
Why did you want to intern at Good Housekeeping?
Not only is Good Housekeeping a great read, they publish content that is thoroughly researched. GH has its own Research Institute where they test different products and deem if those products are worthy of “The Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.” Also, I believe that the longevity of the brand speaks for itself: the publication has been thriving for over a century, and there must be something pretty incredible about the magazine for it to have been successful for so long.
How did your past internships prepare you for this one?
My internship at Good Housekeeping is the first one I’ve had at a well known magazine.(It’s actually my first editorial internship.) However, I spent years teaching ballet and tap at an afterschool program in Queens. I genuinely believe that if you could have patience with children, you are prepared to deal with almost anything… seriously!
What’s your daily schedule like at your internship? What’s the coolest thing you’ve gotten to do so far?
One of the incredible things about my internship is that I genuinely don’t have a set schedule. One second I’ll be transcribing an interview, the next I’ll be combing through Instagram for cute pet pictures for GH! There’s always a variety of tasks and responsibilities I get asked to do and not of those tasks is ever boring.
I’ve also done a ton of research throughout the semester, and the coolest/most rewarding thing is being able to see some of that research translate into an article for the magazine! I spent a good amount of the semester pitching/researching women that could be featured in the “How She Does It” column and, as this semester and my internship are coming to an end, there will be a story in an upcoming issue about someone I researched.
What are your favorite magazines, and why?
Besides Good Housekeeping, I’m a huge fan of Rolling Stone (where I plan on interning next semester, woo!) and Nylon. Both publications have great coverage of the music scene, which I love reading about. Nylon also has some great feature stories on upcoming designers, artists and musicians, which makes their content original and unique to their brand.
How did you hear about Ed?
Last year, I had a friend who recommended me to the site. She was also looking for internships and told me about Ed2010. Then when looking for internships, I specifically remember Googling the names of publications with the word “internship” next to it. One of the first hits I got was actually the Ed2010 site. It felt like I had struck gold! I now had access to a bunch of internship openings that I would have never found before.
What do you think made your Ed Trust Fund application stand out?
This is a tough one to answer—I think it was evident that I am really, really passionate about the magazine industry. I think magazines are a wonderful resource for entertainment, news and information, and I believe my application reflected that.
What advice would you give to aspiring interns?
Do every task with enthusiasm and make connections! I got super lucky this semester because my supervisor is wonderful (patient, helpful, awesome!), so it was easy to bond with her. But talking to other members of the staff is important because it makes you more than just Intern #253: people are more likely to remember who you are, and they’re also more likely to think of you when they need help. The more you do, the more you learn!
What are your postgraduate plans?
Working somewhere in the magazine industry! My internship has been a great experience and I can genuinely see myself in that kind of environment for the rest of my career.
