I’ll be the first to admit that it’s getting more and more difficult to stave off boredom. I’m trying to tell myself that now is the time to catch up on the shows and movies I never had a chance to see or rewatch my favorites like The Devil Wears Prada (which I’ve watched an embarrassing amount of times already!). But I was coming up short, especially on shows rooted in the magazine industry, which I’m feeling especially nostalgic for right now. So I did a little digging and compiled a list of all the best TV shows and movies while we’re all stuck inside. Happy watching and be well!
The Bold Type
The Bold Type follows Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee), and Sutton (Meghann Fahy; all three are pictured above) who work at Scarlet magazine, a women’s title that breaks female stereotypes while under the guidance of EIC Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin), who will quickly become your fictional mentor.
Younger
What happens when your boss thinks you’re 26 but you’re actually 40? Liza (Sutton Foster) has finally landed her dream job, but it comes at a price, and a big secret. Younger dives in head first revealing the in’s and out’s of the publishing world. Check out this Ed2010 article to see why Kelsey (Hilary Duff) is the modern definition of a #bossbabe!
Sex & The City
Freelance magazine writer Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), the queen of “I couldn’t help but wonder…”, is the perfect example of how you don’t have to look too hard for a story idea. You just need a great group of friends. Now’s the time to start at the beginning and rewatch the franchise’s six seasons and two movies.
Trainwreck
In Trainwreck, Amy Schumer’s character (Amy) undergoes one of the most relatable tasks any writer can attest to: your EIC assigning you a piece you really aren’t interested in. But, her character quickly realizes it’s more than just telling a story.
I Feel Pretty
An Amy Schumer double-feature?! Heck Yes! Schumer is back and this time she’s fulfilling her lifelong dream of working at a beauty magazine. But like many women, her character (Renee) battles a deep insecurity of not feeling pretty enough. Will she find the confidence she needs for her dream job? You’ll have to watch to find out!
Set it Up
Netflix’s Set it Up is the perfect combination of editorial-based content with a dose of romance. Two assistants played by Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell (one an EA for a big-time magazine EIC), are tired of spending days and nights at the office for their workaholic bosses. So, they hatch a plan to set them up.
Ugly Betty
Ugly Betty (America Farrera) centers around a girl’s dream of becoming a writer/editor at the fictional women’s fashion mag, Mode.
Confessions of a Shopaholic
Becky Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) loves two things: shopping and more shopping. No matter how hard she tries (even freezing her credit cards) she can’t stop. But when a debt collector comes knocking on her door, she does everything imaginable to pay off her debt, including pretending to understand finance to land a money advice column at a finance journal. Which ultimately begs the question, Will she start listening to her own advice?

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
When Michelle (Kathryn Hahn) won’t use her personal life as inspiration for a story, Andie steps in and offers a different angle on the pitch: “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” What started as an experiment for a story, slowly turns into feelings and she isn’t sure if she does want to lose the guy she’s dating (Matthew McConaughey) in 10 days.

If you’re unfamiliar with this 90’s TV series, try imagining Friends, but rather being centered around a coffee shop, it’s a high-style magazine. It’s as awesome as it sounds. The sitcom (starring David Spade, Laura San Giacomo, and Wendie Malick) details the inner workings of a magazine between a father-daughter duo, a former model, a photographer, and an editorial assistant.
